32" MTB wheel fixture

One framebuilding challenge is obtaining accurate seatstay and chainstay mitres, with the chainstay / bottom bracket and seat tube top junctions being particularly tricky. Achieving adequate tyre and chainring clearance on off-road builds often results in head scratching and now with the introduction of 32” MTB wheels it’s back to the drawing board to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

New bicycle standards are always frustrating, but in this case it gave me an opportunity to improve my Stay-n-Place 😀 fixture to work with 32" MTB wheels (as well as 29er/700c sizes).

The design is super simple with the main requirements to be:

  • Made from 30mm x 40mm aluminium bar

  • Fit Paragon dummy axles

  • Fit a Bicycle Academy frame fixture

  • Fit a Flume seatstay/chainstay mitre fixture

  • Be adjustable for 32er, 29er/700c wheels

  • Be adjustable for a range of different tyre widths

  • Be easily removable and pivot between seat and chainstays

  • Require minimal cuts and time to make on the mill.

The results are shown below and I’ve included some drawings should any builders that come across this page want to make their own. I daresay it will be modified again at some point, but for now it should do the trick.
